An bizarre story has emerged from the Middle East overnight with a leading local newspaper claiming Zlatko Dalić is set to be announced as the new manager of Qatar.
Local daily newspaper Al Raya, which is not exactly a fringe publication and is one of Qatar’s top five daily newspapers, made the claim.
Al Raya insists they have exclusive information from unnamed sources, stating that “Dalić has reached an agreement on all the details, which will be announced in the coming hours, as the successor to Spanish manager Félix Sánchez.”
The report points out that the Croatian coach is no stranger to Doha, having secured a bronze medal with Croatia at the World Cup there.
It also highlights his familiarity with Arab football, thanks to his previous stints managing Saudi clubs Al-Faisaly and Al-Hilal, as well as Al-Ain in the UAE.
The story has quickly gained traction, with an accompanying article titled “Meet Zlatko Dalić, Qatar’s New Manager.” It claims that everyone is now waiting for the Qatari Football Association to make the agreement official and begin preparations.
The official website of the Croatian Football Federation (HNS) makes no mention of Dalić packing his bags for a new role and he is currently preparing to lead Croatia in the quarterfinals of the UEFA Nations League against France in March.
Dalić has a contract with HNS until the summer of 2026.
