Advent in the eastern Croatian city of Osijek has officially begun, bringing a magical festive atmosphere to the city with a mix of music, culture, delicious food, and handcrafted goods.
Accompanied by a concert from the popular band The Frajle, Advent in Osijek 2024 was officially opened on Saturday at Holy Trinity Square in Tvrđa.
Advent in Osijek, featuring a rich musical and cultural programme alongside a variety of gastronomic and artisanal offerings, will run until 31 December.
The opening ceremony was led by Osijek’s Deputy Mayor, Dragan Vulin, who reminded attendees that Osijek’s Advent had been named the most beautiful in Croatia for the past two years.
“We’ve done everything to defend that title, but more important than any accolades is ensuring that our visitors feel the festive spirit and enjoy the rich offerings,” Vulin said.
He highlighted that visitors can look forward to 14 food stalls and 10 offering handmade crafts and local products. A new feature this year is the Dome of Good Wishes, located in the main square in Tvrđa, where visitors can send good wishes from Osijek.
“I invite all our residents and guests from other areas to visit our Advent, which runs until New Year’s. This year, we’ve focused on three key elements: a top-tier music programme, excellent gastronomic offerings, and an unforgettable festive atmosphere,” Vulin added.
In addition to the main location in Tvrđa, Osijek’s Advent extends to other parts of the city. The central Christmas tree and Advent wreath are located at Pope John Paul II Square, where the traditional Advent candle-lighting will begin tomorrow.
Tajana Rogulja, Director of Osijek’s Tourist Board, noted that this year’s event is themed under the slogan Good Wishes from Osijek.
“With this slogan, our Advent becomes a symbol of the warmest and most heartfelt wishes we share with family and friends, especially those who cannot be with us. At the Dome of Good Wishes, visitors can write postcards to send across Croatia and the world. For younger generations, there’s also a digital photo point to create lasting memories,” Rogulja said.
Advent offers a host of activities for children as well. King Držislav Park features a large funfair with a Ferris wheel, while the Christmas tram is set to return to the city’s streets. A special highlight is Santa’s Grotto, opening on 13 December at the Archaeological Museum. Meanwhile, the ice skating rink at Sokol is already open for winter sports enthusiasts.
The musical programme promises performances from renowned artists such as NO Jazz Band, Fluentes, Igor Delač, the Husar Sisters, Vigor Group, Vesna Pisarović, Sinovi Ravnice, Giuliano, Diktatori, and Minea. A particularly special touch will be a concert dedicated to Kićo Slabinac, marking Osijek’s city anniversary.
Rogulja also announced the Good Deeds House, a space reserved for the humanitarian efforts of local associations and volunteers.
Advent in Osijek 2024 will be open from 4:00 pm to 10:00 pm on weekdays, with extended hours until midnight on weekends.
