The first-ever sighting of a snow bunting (Plectrophenax nivalis), a rare visitor to Croatia, has been recorded at Krka National Park.

This discovery not only enriches the Park’s impressive bird count to 230 species but also underscores the importance of preserving its unique natural habitats.

“It is with great pleasure that we announce the first recorded sighting of a snow bunting (Plectrophenax nivalis) within the Krka National Park. This remarkable discovery brings the Park’s bird count to an impressive 230 species,” Krka National Park said.

The snow bunting is a bird that typically inhabits colder, northern regions such as Iceland, Norway, and Russia, and is only occasionally observed in Croatia.

Even its wintering grounds are usually further north, making this sighting near the Burnum amphitheatre in Ivoševci particularly noteworthy.

The male in its winter plumage was spotted thanks to the keen observation skills of one of the Park’s dedicated rangers.

“Protected areas like Krka National Park are vital for preserving biodiversity and natural habitats. Every new species sighted here, such as the snow bunting, underscores the importance of our work in conservation and environmental protection.

This discovery also demonstrates how proper management and regular monitoring allow us to safeguard not only specific species but entire ecosystems that are crucial for maintaining the natural balance,” said Nella Slavica, Director of the Krka National Park Public Institution.

The snow bunting measures between 15 and 18 cm in length. It nests in high mountains and rocky northern coasts, while in winter it is often found on open coastal grasslands and heathlands.

Although relatively trusting, it is an active bird, constantly on the move.

Krka National Park takes pride in its extraordinary wealth of birdlife, with 229 species recorded to date, 88 of which are wintering birds.

The Park is also a vital resting stop for migratory birds. The presence of the snow bunting further highlights the importance of preserving the natural habitats within the Park.
