Construction work on the new swimming pool in the Zagreb neighbourhood of Špansko is progressing smoothly and ahead of schedule.
This ambitious project, which began in July last year, is expected to be completed within 18 months, meaning Zagreb residents will have access to a new, state-of-the-art swimming facility by early 2026.
On Tuesday, Mayor Tomislav Tomašević and Deputy Mayor Luka Korlaet visited the site to review progress.
“The construction of the Špansko swimming pool has been promised for the past 20 years and represents a crucial step in enhancing Zagreb’s sports infrastructure. This €34 million investment, funded by the city budget, demonstrates our commitment to prioritising sports development,” said Mayor Tomašević.
The new facility will feature a large sports and recreational pool, a smaller educational and rehabilitation pool, a sauna and wellness area, seating for 300 spectators, and a corrective exercise hall.
Spanning 5,900 square metres, the complex will include one underground and two above-ground levels, complete with additional amenities such as spa zones.
A public procurement process for equipping the facility, valued at an estimated €1.4 million, has already been launched. Mayor Tomašević emphasised the significance of the project for residents of Zagreb’s western districts, who have waited decades for such a resource.
The swimming pool will provide access to swimming programmes for all age groups—from children to the elderly—alongside lessons for non-swimmers, recreational activities, and professional sports. It will also relieve pressure on existing pool facilities in other parts of the city.
“This will be like a compact thermal spa,” added Deputy Mayor Korlaet. “By building schools and sports facilities, we are not only expanding capacity but also creating high-quality architectural landmarks for future generations.” He noted that the project is being realised based on the award-winning design by Njirić plus arhitekti d.o.o. and Studio Ante Murales d.o.o.
The Špansko swimming pool is just one of several strategic projects currently underway in Zagreb.
Other key initiatives include the construction of the city library and Paromlin socio-cultural centre, the renovation of Dom sportova, and the development of Sarajevska Street with a tramline.
Procurement processes are also in progress for works on Kranjčevićeva Stadium, public rental flats in Podbrežje, and Heinzelova Street tram tracks.
Meanwhile, the tender for renovating Kino Europa is expected to be announced shortly, with work commencing in the near future.
