The record for the most number of tourists to visit the famous tourist attraction in the southern Dalmatian city of Dubrovnik, the cities stone walls, is about to be broken, reports dalje.com. In the first 9 months of this year, the walls have had 672,000 visitors, 7 percent more than in the same period in 2011.
Niko Kapetanic, secretary of the organisation charged with looking after the famous city stone walls, says that they are on track this year to set a new record for the amount of tourist to visit the walls in one year.
To date the most successful tourist season recorded was in 2009 when the walls had 765,000 visitors. During September this year, there were 129,000, or 15 percent more than September 2011.
88 percent of ticket sales were from individual sales, with 7 percent via group sales and 4.3 percent via the “Dubrovnik Card” system the city has in place. The series of stone walls are 1940 meters long and 25 meters high. In 1979, the old city of Dubrovnik, which includes a substantial portion of the old walls of Dubrovnik, joined the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites.
