Croatia’s KHL ice hockey club Medveščak have signed Finnish defenceman Hannu Pikkarainen. The 6’1 tall 29-year-old, who already has KHL experience after playing for Dinamo Minsk in the 2010/2011 season, joins the Zagreb club from Skellefteå AIK who play in the Swedish Elite League. Medveščak find themselves 5th on the table in the 7-team league after beating league leaders and favourites for the title SKA Saint Petersburg last night in Zagreb. SKA, who were previously unbeaten before arriving in Zagreb, went ahead early through their superstar Ilya Kovalchuk. The former NHL legend is reportedly worth more than the entire Zagreb team but that did not count for anything as Medveščak won a tense penalty shootout after the scores were tied at 3-3 in regulation time.
