For the first time in the history of the Bundestag, a Croatian has taken their seat in the German parliament in Berlin.
37-year-old Irene Mihalić, who originates from Croatia’s capital Zagreb and now lives in Gelsenkirchen, will represent the Green Party in the Bundestag, reports daily Slobodna Dalmacija. Mihalic says that her choice for the Green Party has surprised many, considering her background as a police officer.
“Many are asking me how I opted for the Greens, which are perceived as the party of fighters from the street barricades, who throw stones at the police. In the party there were people who looked at me strangely, but I think that the profession of a police officer and membership to the Greens complement each other because they are related to the topic that interests me, such as civil rights,” said the history-making Croat, before adding.
“And I know how both sides work”, said Mihalic, who also says that her parents are very proud of her.
