‘You’d be surprised when you see the condition of some schools in Croatia. Such conditions, when we talk about this region, I would compare only with those in Kosovo, “said Chilean architect Carlos Vasquez, who works as an expert for UNICEF to improve learning environments for children.
Vasquez has worked for UNICEF since 2006, when he was invited to write a chapter about architecture for the book ‘Child-friendly schools’. Vasquez does not have a lot of nice words to say when talking about the state of Croatian schools. The Chilean lists five poor examples in the Pozega-Slavonia county, and uses them as a theme for his latest workshop in Croatia, which is held in collaboration with UNICEF and organized by the Faculty of Architecture, School of Design and the School of Public Health “Andrija Stampar ‘ in Croatia, reports Jutarnji list.
“In these five schools in Croatia the heating system works on wood, which blew my mind. I would not be surprised if children there have respiratory problems due to inhalation of carbon monoxide. These seven-year old children probably have lungs like a serious smoker and If I was the Minister of Health, I would immediately ordered testing. Also, these schools are inaccessible to children with disabilities, which means that there are not possibility of education, “says Vasquez.
