The Great Croatian Doctor Drain

Croatia is slowly losing its medical doctors to overseas hospitals…
Since working restrictions eased on 1 July when Croatia joined the European Union, in the subsequent four months the Croatian Medical Chamber has received 151 requests from doctors in the country to leave to work abroad, 107 more requests than it received in the whole of 2012 when only 44 requests came in, reports daily Novi list.
“If the trend from July, August and September continues next year, we can expect that around 300-400 doctors will be seeking documentation so that they can work abroad. The number looking to work overseas could equal the number that graduate each year. Then you need to add those that retire each year. I believe that the drain of doctors could even be greater because of the state of the system,” Dr.Katarina Sekelj-Kauzlarić told Novi list.
According to the report Germany is the most popular destination for Croatian doctors (47%), followed by the UK (22%), Sweden (18%) and Norway (12%).
