Croats Take 1 Million Fewer Sick Days off Work in 2013

Croatian workers had more than 1 million fewer sick days in 2013 compared to 2012, but it might have nothing to do with them being more healthier last year…
Croats reduced the amount of sick days off work they took by a massive 1,342,490 days, or around 4,500 less per day last year, saving the Croatian Institute for Health Insurance 116 million kunas (15 million EUR) in the process, but new laws introduced last year tightening up control are seen as the real reason behind the large decline.
New laws regarding compulsory health insurance now mean a fine between 8,000 and 15,000 kunas (1,050 – 2000 EUR) and forfeiture of fees for those found abusing sick leave or preventing recovery. The Croatian Institute for Health Insurance regularly conduct sick leave controls, with 24,000 controls, at the request of employers, being carried out.
