CroatiaRussian chess Grandmaster and former World Chess Champion Garry Kasparov, who dominated the chess world from 1983 – 2000, has been granted Croatian citizenship, reports Dnevnik.hr…

Political activist Kasparov, who is considered by many to be the greatest chess player of all time and a well-known critic of Russia’s President Vladimir Putin, met with Prime Minister Zoran Milanović and was reportedly given Croatian citizenship thanks to the prominent role he played during the 1990’s war and his lobbying for Croatia and Vukovar. Kasparov spends most summers in the Dalmatian town of Makarska, and has a good understanding of the Croatian language. In October 2013, Kasparov, who has lived outside of Russia for the last few years, applied for Latvian citizenship.
