You know some basic Croatian, enough to get you by, but there is nothing that will impress more than knowing a local phrase or slang that you can slip into a conversation. Croatia Week has launched its ‘Word / Phrase of the Day’, where we will teach you a variety of words and phrases commonly used in Croatia, but not commonly found in language learning material.
Today’s Phrase
Da je baba muško, zvala bi se Duško
The phrase Da je baba muško, zvala bi se Duško is used when someone uses a lot of ‘ifs’ and ‘buts’, someone who likes to turn back the clock and say things would be like this now if that happened back then, even though it can never be changed. The literal translation is – if Grandma was a man, she would be called Duško (male name in Croatia)
Example: ‘If Boban did not give the ball away against France in the semi-final at the World Cup in 1998, we would have won and been in the final. Probably would have won it,” “Ej, Da je baba muško, zvala bi se Duško,”
