Referendum Sought to Change Way Croats Vote

Around half the required number of signatures to force a referendum to change the way Croatians vote in the future have been gathered…
Head of the ‘U ime obitelji’ (In the name of the family) association Željka Markić held a press conference on Tuesday to appeal to those who have yet to sign the ‘elect MP’s by name and surname’ referendum document which is aimed at changing Croatia’s constitution. Markić’s association wants to change the way Members of Parliament are voted in, and introduce a ‘preferential voting system’ where party lists have less influence on the candidates elected. The system is one used in a number of European countries such as Austria, Finland, Sweden, Norway, Estonia, Slovakia, and Belgium to name a few.
The cut-off date for the association to gather the required number of signatures to force a referendum is 5 October, with Markić saying on Tuesday that around half of the 450,000 signatures had been collected.
