Lamborghini, Beamers & Maserati Gathering Dust at Customs Warehouse

Luxury cars worth tens of millions of euros are gathering dust in a warehouse in Zagreb…

The owners of the vehicles, which include the pricey Lamborghini Murciélago, a Maserati Quattroporte and a BMW X6, have had their ‘toys’ seized by Customs in Croatia for failing to pay the necessary duty or tax on them coming into the country. The vehicles will go under the hammer, with the proceeds filling up the state coffers.

From 2012 till 2014 the Croatian Customs Department have seized a total of 216 vehicles in the capital Zagreb alone. In the last two years 238 cars have sold at auction.

“Vehicles under Customs supervision for violation of Annex C of the Convention on Temporary Imports,” Customs say is the most common reason for seizing vehicles.

The convention, known as the Istanbul Convention, states that a person is entitled to temporary importation of vehicles of foreign license plates if they have headquarters, domicile or residence in another country. In other words, a foreign national may drive on Croatian roads without paying customs duties and excise taxes for no more than six months in a year. Customs say seizures have dropped off since Croatia entered the EU.
