New York Premiere for Miki Bratanić’s ‘Story of the Konoba’

The man who has the first and only konoba in Croatia with UNESCO protected cultural heritage status, has arrived in America on his educational tour…

Recently Croatia Week profiled Miki Bratanić, who is the owner of a traditional Dalmatian konoba, or wine cellar, in Vrbanj on the island of Hvar, and who is also the author of the first ever book dedicated to the konoba. Bratanić will be in New York this week to talk about what he says is an important part of Croatian tradition. Here is an invitation to the event:

The Croatian Fraternal Union-Lodge 789 invites you to join us this Friday in midtown Manhattan for a unique evening filled with Dalmatian history of wine, food, and songs, led by Croatian ethno-researcher and klapa singer Miki Bratanić, and author of the recent book titled “The Story of the Konoba”.

This will be the New York premiere of Mr. Bratanić’s short documentary, aptly named “The Story of the Konoba”. After the program, the finer aspects of Dalmatian wines, prosciutto and cheeses will be further analyzed, as well as the availability of his book.

Special guest members of our own local “Klapa Astoria” will be joining us for this special event.

A “konoba” is a traditional family wine cellar. In the old days, a family’s life centered around the konoba, which served as a functional storage place for vineyard tools, as well as a cool place to make and store their homemade wine in barrels. It also doubled as a place to gather, socialize, cook and eat after a hard day’s work in the vineyards, farms, or fishing – all done for the sake of feeding their family.

Miki’s devotion to his family wine cellar led to his research of the classic Dalmatian konoba, and its influence on work, life and singing of these hardworking men and women.
