Young Bayern Munich talent Riccardo Basta, who was captain of the club’s youth side, has signalled his intentions to one day play for Croatia…
Basta (19), born to an Italian father and a Croatian mother, is a regular in FC Bayern Munich’s Under 19 side, and despite currently holding only a German passport, he is adamant who he wants to represent on the international stage.
“My father thinks the decision is a betrayal, but it is a decision I made myself. I want to play for Croatia, Of coarse, if Croatia wants me,” Riccardo told daily Jutarnji list.
“Why? Because of Luka Modrić. He plays in my position and he is the best defensive midfielder in the world and he draws me to Croatia,” Basta, whose mother Kristina comes from the town of Velika Gorica, said.
Basta is contracted to the German champions until 2016, but may go out on loan in the New Year.
“There are a lot of players in my position at Bayern. It will be difficult to get a chance (in the first team). I would not have anything against going on loan to another good Bundesliga club to get some experience.
