128 Arrested Drink-Driving As Martinje Kicks-Off

True to their word, police were out in force on Croatian roads last night as Croats celebrated Martinje, or St. Martain’s Day, a day where the grape must be “baptised”, and is marked with a lot of wine drinking.

Police in the capital Zagreb apprehended 399 law breakers on the roads from 22:00-6:00. Out of the 399 drivers caught for offences, 128 of them were charged with drink-driving. Police confirmed that 24 of those charged with drink-driving had recorded blood alcohol levels more than 1.5, the limit in Croatia is 0.05.

Martinje is celebrated in many towns and villages particularly around Zagreb,and in the hillside wine cellars around Dugo Selo where St. Martain is the patron saint.
