New England Patriots’ ‘Croatian’ head coach Bill Belichick wrote himself into the history books on Sunday after his team beat Seattle Seahawks 28-24 in the 2015 NFL Super Bowl XLIX…
Belichick, whose grandparents Ivan Biličić and Marija Barković who emigrated from Karlovac in Croatia to America, won his fourth Vince Lombardi Trophy to etch his name into the NFL record book. Belichick’s fourth Super Bowl title (2002, 2004, 2005, 2015) now ties him with former Pittsburgh Steelers coach Chuck Noll for the most Super Bowl wins by a coach in NFL history.
Belichick, whose father Stephen Biličić played for the Detroit Lions and was an assistant coach and scout with the United States Naval Academy football team for 33 years, also is headed off to Croatia thanks to the Croatian Tourist Board. With both coaches in Sunday’s game having a Croatian connection, the Tourist Board took the opportunity to offer the winning coach an all expenses paid trip back to the country of ‘their ancestors’.
