Although Zagreb’s Maksimir stadium had been selected as the venue for Croatia’s important Euro 2016 qualifier against Italy, it looks like the match could well be played now at Split’s Poljud stadium…
Croatian Football Federation President Davor Šuker announced over the weekend that he will suggest at the next federation board meeting that Split hosts the qualifier against Italy on 12 June, and that Poljud stadium also hosts the qualifier against Bulgaria in October.
“On Thursday at the board meeting I will put forward that Split hosts the matches against Italy and Bulgaria. Damir Vrbanović, Zorislav Srebrić and Zoran Cvrk will travel to Split on Tuesday to agree details and I believe that on Thursday we will vote and communicate with UEFA,” said Šuker.
“I believe that this can be a critical step in establishing constructive communication with Hajduk and Split. Our goal is a united Croatian football family in which Hajduk plays an important role. I hope that they can recognise the good will and that through these two games in Split we can build the foundations for good cooperation in the future,” Šuker added.
The Croatian Football Federation have already announced that Zagreb would host the Italy qualifier, and Šuker believes that there should be no problem in the technicalities in changing that.
“As a member of the UEFA executive committee I will do all I can in my power that we don’t have any obstacles. I will go to Nyon personally if need be and ask that the venue be changed,” concluded Šuker. (photo / Ballota – Wikicommons)
