Croatia has had its first request for the protection of geographical indications and designations of origin granted at EU level…
Prosciutto, or pršut, from the island of Krk (Krčki pršut) is the first Croatian product to be registered and been given EU protection status for geographical indications and designations of origin, the EU published on Tuesday.
The process has been a long one, with the wheels to the request submission put into motion in 2010. 14 Croatian products in total were put forward to the Commission for protection on the European Union market more than 2 years ago, including Lika potatoes, Drniš pršut, Ogulin sauerkraut, Dalmatian Marasca cherries, Zagorje turkey, Poljica soparnik, Virovitica pepper, Neretva mandarins, Slavonian kulen, Cres extra virgin olive oil, Dalmatian pršut, Baranja kulen and Varaždin cabbage.
Krk pršut, which now has to completely originate from the island of Krk to carry that name on the EU market, is the first request submitted by Croatia which has been resolved.
