Construction on one of the biggest projects in Croatia officially started on Wednesday morning in the town of Karlovac…
KAquarium and river museum will have 10 large aquariums and a number of smaller ones with over 150 live European freshwater fish species, of which about 40 will be endemic. The building will be in the shape of shells and fully integrated into the environment with grass roofs, creating a green oasis in the heart of Croatia.
“The idea to build the aquarium in Karlovac came about 10 years ago when were thinking about the need to preserve our beautiful rivers. We have prepared a project that is aimed at dealing with the protection of our fresh waters, and at the same time show the beauty of Karlovac rivers,” Marina Grčić, head of the Department of EU funds and investments at the Karlovac council said.
The project is worth 36 million kuna (4.8 million euros), with EU funds covering 98.7% of the total amount.
“The aquarium will strengthen the local tourist infrastructure and generate new attractions for tourists all year round in Karlovac,” Grčić added.
KAquarium is expected to attract over 12,000 visitors in its first year when it opens next year.
