Croatia’s Prime Minister Zoran Milanović has confirmed on Wednesday that the Pelješac Bridge, which is to connect the Croatian peninsula of Pelješac and the southernmost part of the country with the Croatian mainland, will be built, and quickly…
A tender for the construction of the bridge is to be announced in the last quarter of this year, with construction of the bridge expected to take between 2 and a half and 3 years. Work is expected to start in spring 2016.
“The money is here, the criteria is clear. As we strive to lead the country with order, so we have done carrying out this job. It is also a political project. The foundation of it all is the desire that Croatia needs to connect with the south. We must act”, said the PM.
Up to 85% of the project, which will cost around 200 million euros, is expected to come from EU funds.
Transport Minister Siniša Hajdaš Dončić confirmed that European Commission feasibility and environmental impact studies were now complete.
The planned bridge has been a contentious political issue since construction started in 2007 and stalled. The bridge is intended to connect Pelješac peninsular with the Croatian mainland, spanning the Adriatic Sea, which separates the two near the Bay of Mali Ston and the Neretva Channel.
