6 Reasons to Visit Croatia
Attracting millions of visitors every year, family holidays to Croatia have never been so popular. It’s no surprise given the stunning beaches and fun-filled attractions. If you’re looking for a place to spend some time with your nearest and dearest, then we’ve got 6 reasons why you should visit this particular European gem.
Beaches
There’s endless stretches of golden coastline for those looking to take advantage of the weather. Lapad Beach in Dubrovnik is perfectly suited for families with extensive facilities including loungers and showers. Alternatively, head further up the coast to the town of Nin in the Zadar Country and you’ll find some secluded bays considered amongst the best in the world.
Weather
Pack plenty of sun cream, Croatia is one of the hottest destinations in the Mediterranean, there’s very few days of rain and from May through to August, the sun doesn’t set until 9pm. Meaning you will have loads of time to take advantage of both the cultural and natural attractions of this country during the day, leaving the evenings free to enjoy a little alfresco dining, or walks along the beach.
Islands
Leave the hustle and bustle of the cities behind to discover your own castaway away paradise. With 1,185 islands to choose from, you’ll be spoiled for choice. Hvar Island remains one of the most popular, accessible via ferry from the mainland. Start your adventure on this island by visiting the sights including the 16th century Cathedral of St Stephen before sampling the fine dining cuisine at the chic restaurants which line the harbor. Alternatively, hop over to Brac Island which is famed for its picture postcard beaches and thrill seeking watersports.
Food
Come with a big appetite, Croatia promises a culinary feast. Famed for its mouthwatering seafood, this is Mediterranean cuisine at its best. Be sure to indulge in the local favourites such as crni rizot – a creamy risotto cooked with cuttlefish and squid ink. The country’s cured ham known as Prsut is also worth sampling, best enjoyed with olives, cheese and a glass of wine.
Historic Treasures
Take a step back through time at one of the many ancient sights located throughout the country. Dubrovnik’s Old Town is one such example, where you can marvel at intricate churches and monasteries which date back hundreds of years. Other highlights include Diocletian’s Palace in Split and the 1st century Roman amphitheater, Pula Arena.
Natural Wonders
With a varied landscape from coastal towns to mountainous regions, there’s no shortage of natural attractions for fans of the outdoors. Be sure to spend a day at either Krka or Plitvice National Park, both offering spectacular scenery. Hike or cycle into dense forests and find your own haven of tranquility complete with cascading waterfalls and crystal clear lakes.
A trip to Croatia is guaranteed to impress. Explore some of its sun-kissed regions and you may discover your new favourite holiday destination.
