In just its first weekend of screening more than 10,000 cinema goers in Croatia watched Vlatka Vorkapic’s new film Sonja and the Bull, setting a new box office record in the country.
The film earn’t more than 300,000 kuna (40,000 euros) this weekend, making it the best opening from any Croatian film in recent times.
Sonja and the Bull is about a city girl from Zagreb, Sonja, who is a vegetarian and a hardcore animal-rights activist who strongly opposes bullfighting in the Dalmatian hinterland region. People find this irritating and they conclude that no matter how passionately Sonja loves animals, she would never dare to stand in front of a bull. Bets are raised and Sonja faces a challenge in the form of Ante, known far and wide for his powers of persuasion.
