If asked most people would guess that Zagreb is Croatia’s largest city. But they would be wrong…
Territorially the largest city in Croatia is Gospić. With a size of 967 km2, Gospić, despite having a population of just over 13,000 people, is even bigger than a number of European cities, including Paris, Berlin and Barcelona.
When comparing Croatia’s largest city with others in the country, it dwarfs them. Zagreb, the nation’s capital and most populous city, is 641 km2, Osijek in the east is 169 km2, and Split is just 80 km2. Ironically Gospić is the third smallest seat of a county government in Croatia.
