The father of a motorcyclist killed by a drunk driver left a Zagreb Court in Croatia in tears, whilst his mother and sister were thrown out of the court room as a judge sentenced Dejan Macesic to 2 years imprisonment, even though the law stipulates that the minimum sentence is 3 years.
Macesic (43), who owns the One2Play company pleaded guilty to killing 23-year-old Sinisa Smiljanic after crashing into him on 7 July in the Croatian capital Zagreb whilst he was drunk behind the wheel of his luxury vehicle.
“He destroyed our lives. How is it possible that he gets two years, if the minimum sentence for that offence is three years,” asked the victim’s mother after the decision.
The victim’s sister was removed from the court room after saying that the defendant “bought” his way out of a heavier sentence, writes portal 24sata.
The family’s lawyer Veljko Miljevic said that the sentence was wrong and far too light. The prosecution was seeking five years imprisonment.
