The Ship known as the ‘most beautiful in the world’ has sailed into Dubrovnik yesterday…
Tall Italian training ship Amerigo Vespucci, named after the explorer Amerigo Vespucci, sailed into Dubrovnik on Croatia’s southern Dalmatian coast on Thursday, where it will remain until Sunday 29 May.
The historically most important ship of the Italian Navy is in Dubrovnik as part of a maritime mission honouring its 85th anniversary. Amerigo Vespucci, which is weighs 4,000-tonnes, is 100 metres long, 15.5 metres wide, and has a drought of 7.3 metres. The ship has 26 sails – square sails, staysails, and jibs: all are traditional canvas sails.
Since its launch in Castellammare di Stabia on 22 February 1931, the ship has been used nearly every year for the training of the Italian Naval Academy, conducting 79 training missions around the world.
