Rio Olympics 2016: Sara Kolak Wins Javelin Gold for Croatia!

21-year-old Croatian Sara Kolak has shocked the javelin world by winning gold in the women’s javelin event at the Rio Olympics tonight…

Kolak threw a Croatian record of 66.18 metres with her fourth attempt in the final to win the event. Kolak, was one of the outsiders and was only expected to make the final. Kolak cruised into the top eight of the final and improved as the event progressed. Kolak’s fourth attempt on the night of 66.18 metres was enough to win what is one of the real shock golds of the Olympic field events.

Kolak, who hails from Ludbreg, threw a Croatian record of 64.30 metres to qualify for the final and then broke her own record with her gold-medal winning throw. Sunette Viljoen from South Africa won silver with a throw of 64.92, whilst Barbara Spotokova from the Czech Republic won bronze with a throw of 64.80.

“I still can’t believe it. I showed that I can fight out there. My goal was to throw 65 metres before the final, I have never thrown that far in a competition before. Mum, Dad, the medal is coming home. Thank you to everyone who supported me,” a happy Sara, who was at her first Olympic Games, said after her shock win.
