Croatia have won five gold medals at the Rio Olympics and could further add to that tally with the men’s water polo team, boxer Filip Hrgović and high jumper Blanka Vlašić still in action.
Croatia’s haul of 5 gold medals already in Rio betters the previous best of 3 golds which the team won at the London Olympics in 2012. Four years ago discus thrower Sandra Perković, shooter Giovanni Cernogoraz and the men’s water polo team all won gold, whilst the men’s quadruple sculls won silver and Lucija Zaninović (taekwondo) and the men’s handball team won bronze to give 6 medals.

In Rio Croatia already has surpassed that with 7 medals, which in reality is 9 as Hrgović and the men’s water polo have secured medals and are still to compete to decide just which colour.
2016 has been a great Olympics for Croatia with shooter Josip Glasnović, rowers Valent and Martin Sinković, sailing pair Šime Fantela and Igor Marenić, Perković, and Kolak all claiming gold. Silvers to rower Damir Martin and sailor Tonči Stipanović has assured the games have been the best-ever for Croatia since their first in 1992.

Croatia currently sit in 15th place on the overall medal table, and are ranked 3rd in the world for gold medals per capita. The Bahamas, with a population of 388,000, are in first place thanks to Shaunae Miller’s gold in the women’s 400m. Jamaica are in second spot with a population per gold medal of 546,000. Croatia are in third place with a population per gold of 844,600.
