Croatia has another medal at the Rio Olympics after boxer Filip Hrgović won bronze on Friday…
Hrgović (24) lost on a points decision to current amateur world heavyweight champion Tony Yoka in the semi-final of the men’s super heavy over 91 kg boxing tournament to claim the bronze medal this afternoon.
Hrgović, who had beaten his opponent six years ago in the final of the Youth World Amateur Boxing Championships, put in a strong performance but left his attack a little too late to sway the judges decision in what was a close contest that ended 1-2 in favour of the Frenchman.
The Croatian boxer has had an impressive first Olympic tournament, winning his first round fight on points against Ali Eren Demirezen of Turkey, and his quarter-final by knock-out over Cuban Lenier Pero.
Earlier this year Hrgović won gold at the European championship in Bulgaria becoming the second Croat to win a European boxing title and the first Croat to win gold since Mate Parlov, who won gold in 1971 and 1973.
