Croatia’s first Food Outlet has opened in the capital Zagreb…
Opened by Maja and Mario Žamboki, Žabac Food Outlet located on number 4 Tkalčićeva street in downtown Zagreb, sells food items which is not sold in traditional outlets for reasons such as packaging issues, damaged products, or goods approaching its ‘best before’ date.
Today around 1.3 million tonnes of food is thrown away annually. In Croatia that number is around 400,000 tonnes which is thrown away because it is unable to be sold and the Žamboki’s aim is to change that by finding customers for such products.
“With this project we hope to change the mindset that it is not good to throw away food for many reasons, the most important because of the damage to the environment. Food Outlet will be a place where you can buy food, cleaning and hygiene products for affordable prices. At least 50% to 90% off normal prices”, Mario Žamboki said.
Žamboki says he purchases stock from factories where they have made too much, or products have been damaged in production or they are approaching ‘best before’ dates.
“We want to put a smile back on people’s faces. They will be able to buy the best brands on the market for half the price”, he added.
Žamboki hopes to spread and open more outlets around Croatia. The next food outlet is due to open in Zagreb next year in the suburb of Trešnjevka.
The food outlet is open daily from 7am – 10 pm. You can check out what they have on offer here.
