If you are a fan of oysters and good wine then the town of Mali Ston, located at the south of isthmus of the Pelješac peninsula on Croatia’s Adriatic coast, is the place to be later this month.
On Saturday 18 March 2017 the town will once again host the famous annual “Festival of Oysters” on the town’s waterfront to celebrate the holiday Saint Joseph.
The tasting of oysters and Pelješac wines will take place on the seafront in Mali Ston on 18 March 2016 starting at 11am.
As well as sampling the Mali Ston oysters, visitors will have a chance to try muscles and other shell-fish at the festival together with some top quality wines from the Pelješac region.
A full entertainment programme, including folklore performances and Dalmatian music, is planned for the day and evening, as well as a presentation of Croatian island products and raffles.
Ston Oysters farmed in the Bay of Mali Ston were awarded the Grand Prix and Gold Medal at the General Trades International Exhibition in London in 1936.
More details about the festival can be found here.
If you are a first time visitor to the festival there are other attractions in Ston, notably the Walls of Ston, which are the second longest preserved fortification system in the world after the Great Wall of China.
