Hrvatsko Zagorje, which is located in the northern part of Croatia, only a half an hour drive from the capital, Zagreb, is to be home to Croatia’s first natural swimming pool.

The public eco-pool, which will be chemical-free, as well as other facilities at the site, hopes to draw tourists to a part of the country that does not see too many.

The crystal clear natural swimming pool attraction, which will be located in the town of Pregrada, uses a system where the water is contained by an isolating membrane or membranes, in which no chemicals or devices that disinfect or sterilize water are used, and all clarifying and purifying of the water is achieved through biological filters and plants rooted hydroponically in the system.

The pool will be on a 1,500 m2 site and will be 2.5 metres at his its deepest point. There will be an opportunity to have three tracks for swimmers and the pool will be surrounded by sand.

Around the pool there will be facilities to play sports, enjoy the sun and have a drink at a bar, daily Zagorski list reports.

The pool will be developed by Slovenian company Lumil, who designed a number of these throughout Europe. The total investment, including the pool and surrounding cafes, is 1.2 million euros, which will be mostly financed by EU funds.
