Croatian film at Cannes

Croatian film will once again be on show at the world’s premier film festival in Cannes.

The short feature film ‘Trešnje’ (Cherries) by Dubravka Turić has been included in the The Directors’ Fortnight selection of the Cannes Film Festival – which will be held from 18 – 28 May 2017 in Cannes.

Dubravka Turić’s recently won best short film at the 72nd International Film Festival in Venice for Belladonna and is excited with the news that Trešnje has made the selection in Cannes.

“I’m extremely excited and happy. The short film program we have entered contains ten selected titles from thousands of entries so just being selected itself is a great acknowledgment. We also must not forget that Croatian film now has a long-lasting continuity in Cannes. Extraordinary films like ‘Kokoška’ from Una Gunjak, ‘Zvizdan’ by Dalibor Matanić, and last year’s excellent ‘Zvir’ from Miroslav Sikavica, have surely contributed to greater interest in the Croatian movie selector. I congratulate all of us, and above all, HAVC, who for years has laid the foundations for such a creative rise of domestic film,” said director Dubravka Turić.

Trešnje is a story about growing up in the Dalmatian hinterland. Jacob’s endless summer is gradually destroyed by family relationships which are followed by a tragic event which provokes an emotional revolt against adults, as well as the feeling of their own guilt.
