10 Great Day Trips from Split on Croatia’s Dalmatian Coast

What makes the city of Split so great for tourists, apart from the history and sights, is its fantastic location in the heart of the Dalmatian coast to conduct day trips.

There are numerous cities, nature parks and islands you could visit for the day whilst staying in or travelling through Split.

If you wish to experience more of the rich history, natural and unspoiled beauty, as well as breathtaking views, there is an endless list of must-see spots. Some of those destinations are close by, some a bit further but worth the trip.

Here are 10 great day trips you can from Split.

1. Trogir

Trogir

The gorgeous historical town of Trogir is located only 15 km northern of Split. One of the most beautiful towns in Croatia with its interesting city core surrounded b the 15th-century city walls and with a stunning Kamerlengo fortress is today a well-known yacht harbour.

2. Solin

Solin

Solin is a town with wealthy cultural heritage. It is located on the Jadro river, called the Croatian Jordan, because of the rich history of the ancient times. Salona (now Solin), the famous capital of Roman province, and the birthplace of Emperor Diocletian is settled in the heart of this city. This is the largest archaeological site in Croatia, surrounded by gorgeous gates, temples, and an amphitheatre.

Here you can see the oldest Marian shrine established by the queen Jelena. Many other historical locations can be found here, from the time of King Zvonimir in the 11th century until the rule of the Ottoman Empire. Solin can easily be reached from Split by car or a local bus.

3. Klis Fortress

Klis fortress is a medieval fortress situated above the village Klis just outside of Split. The fortress served as a major source of defense in Dalmatia, especially against the Ottoman advance. It was also used to film scenes for the popular HBO series Game of Thrones.

4. Krka National Park

Just an hours drive from Split, Krka National Park is one of Croatia’s real natural jewels. It is located along the middle-lower course of the Krka River and is known for a series of 7 waterfalls. Skradinski Buk waterfall is flanked by traditional watermills, whilst to the north, a nature trail passes another striking cascade, Roški Slap.

5. Skradin

Situated at the entrance of the popular Krka National Park is the charming town of Skradin. The small Mediterranean town, with its narrow paved streets and passages, rich history, stunning scenery, and quality cuisine and wine, is another one of Croatia’s little gems.

The surroundings of Skradin have been inhabited since the Neolithic period – the oldest settlement dates from the year 3500 B.C. The first data about the town of Skradin dates from the year 33 B.C. Some things to check out here.

6. Brač Island

The island of Brač, with the area of around 400km2, is the largest Dalmatian island. It offers a beautiful view over the surrounding area from the island’s peak called Vidova gora. Breathtaking beach Zlatni rat in Bol is one of the most beautiful beaches in the world.

Many other interesting typically Mediterranean settlements on the island are surrounded by sandy beaches and hidden coves. By a ferry boat, it is only 45 minutes away from Split.

7. Šolta Island

This picturesque island of the unspoiled nature and beautiful bays is located only an hour away from Split. Visit the small village of Maslinica and see why is this one of the most beautiful places on the Adriatic coast. Discover this Mediterranean island of olives, figs, and wine, take a walk to St. Nicholas’ Church and enjoy a breathtaking view.

8. Korčula Old Town

Korčula is the second most populous Adriatic island after Krk, separated from the Pelješac peninsula by a narrow strait. The new high-speed ferry connection means you can leave Split at 7:30 am and be in Split by 10:10 am. The return leaves at 17:40 pm giving you time to look around the stunning old town. 9. Mljet

Mljet

Mljet is the most southerly and easterly of the larger Dalmatian islands. The National Park on Mljet includes the western part of the island, Veliko jezero, Malo jezero, Soline Bay and a sea belt 500 m wide from the most prominent cape of Mljet. The central parts of the park are Veliko jezero with the Isle of St. Mary, Malo jezero and the villages of Govedari, Polace and Pomena. The ferry from Split leaves at 7:30 am and arrives on Mljet at 11:10 am. It leaves again at 16:50 in the afternoon back to Split. 

10. Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik, one of Croatia’s most recognisable cities internationally, is possible to visit for the day. You can leave Split at 7:30 am and be in Dubrovnik at 12:00 pm. Time for lunch and a look around the stone-walled city, go for a swim or check out some Game of Thrones filming locations.
