One of Croatia’s busiest airports during the tourist season is set to become operational 24-hours per day from 2018.
Currently open from 6 am to 10 pm, Split Airport is set to become a 24-hour airport, Croatia’s Minister for Sea, Transport and Infrastructure, Oleg Butković, said.
“We are a tourist oriented country and, as a result, Split Airport must be open 24 hours per day during the summer. Weather conditions are much better than in Dubrovnik as there is no strong wind. If necessary, the state will participate in covering part of the expenses. We will surely find the funds,” Butković said.
The move will help ease congestion over the busy summer period, which often sees close to 100,000 passengers pass through during busy weekends.
“Furthermore, it would help avoid similar scenarios from earlier this year when a Croatia Airlines flight bound for Dubrovnik diverted to Zagreb but was denied landing and was forced to fly to Rome instead as no other airport in the country was open at the time,” exyuaviation writes.
At the moment only Franjo Tudman Airport in the capital Zagreb is operational 24 hours per day throughout the year.
Construction on the long-awaited new multi-million euro terminal building at Split Airport is progressing on schedule and is set to open to the public in July 2019.
