Wimbledon 2018: Croatia’s Donna Vekic Reaches Last 16

Donna Vekic

The sole remaining Croatian player in the singles draw at Wimbledon has advanced through to last 16 on Friday.

22-year-old Donna Vekic continued to impress at the All England Club on Friday, beating Belgium’s Yanina Wickmayer in the 3rd round in straight sets 7-6, 6-1.

The Croatian, who caused the biggest upset in the opening round when she knocked out reigning US Open champion Sloane Stephens, was too good on Friday for former world No.12 Wickmayer.

Vekic knocked down 8 aces to 1 in the first set which she would take in a tie-breaker (7-2). The second set proved lighter work after she broke Wickmayer in her opening service game of the set.

Vekic closed out the set and match by giving her opponent just one game to move to the last 16 at Wimbledon for the first time in her career.

She will face the winner of the Julia Goerges v Barbora Strycova match for a quarterfinal spot. Last month Vekic reached her career-high singles ranking of world No. 42.

Vekic became Croatia’s final hope in the singles draw after Marin Cilic was upset on Thursday by Argentina’s Guido Pella in five sets.
