Croatia is increasingly becoming an attractive location for some of the world’s biggest production houses. Last year hit HBO series Game of Thrones filmed for the second year in a row in the southern Dalmatian city of Dubrovnik and Oscar-winning German director Oliver Hirschbiegel was in town shooting a film about the life of the late Princess Diana starring Naomi Watts in the lead role. Now, it seems in 2013 Croatia could attract two major international production projects, bringing in an estimated 30 million euro to the country with it.
Hit TV series The Borgias, set around the 16th century Italian dynasty the Borgia family, look set to film 12 episodes of their third season in the Dalmatian city of Split. Filming is reported to be starting in May and running through to the end of the year.
The second project is the filming of the movie Hercules by director Brett Ratner of X Men and Rush Hour fame and starring Dwayne Johnson. The film is set to be shot on Velebit mountain and at cape Kamenjak in Istria. Paramount Pictures and MGM are producing the 100 million dollar Ratner film.
Although pen has not been put to paper, both projects are in the final phase of negotiation.
