22 February 2019 – Construction has started on a new harbour for ferries and cruise ships on the Dalmatian island of Korčula.
The brand new 10-million euro port, which is financed by the Ministry of Maritime Affairs, Transport and Infrastructure, is being built in Žrnovska Banja (Polačišta), just five kilometers from the Old Town of Korčula.
Currently, Korčula’s western and eastern ports can not cater for boats longer than 100 meters. The new port, which will be able to handle big cruisers, is expected to be complete with the next two years.
Korčula is one of the biggest ports in Croatia after Dubrovnik and Split when it comes to passenger numbers passing through. Over the last couple of years Korčula has seen an increase of over 7% in the number of passenger arrivals.
This week the Korčula Port Authority gave a sneak peak at how the new port in Žrnovska Banja will look once it is complete in the next two years.
