PARIS, 2 JUNE 2019 – Petra Martić has come back from a set down to reach the quarterfinal of the French Open on Sunday.
Martić, who knocked out former world number one Karolína Plíšková in the last round, has beaten Kaia Kanepi from Estonia on centre court to achieve her best ever Grand Slam result.
The Croatian dropped the opening set 7-5 and was down 0-2 in the second set but came back strong to win the next two sets to take the match 5-7, 6-2, 6-4 in just over two hours.
The two players traded breaks in the final set, but the decisive moment came in the eighth game of the set when Martić saved five break points then went on to break the 33-year-old in the next game to leave her one game from victory.
The 28-year-old, who reached her career-high ranking of world No. 28 this month, will face Markéta Vondroušová from the Czech Republic for a place in the semifinal.
Martic, whose previous best at the French Open was a 4th round finish back in 2017, has one WTA singles title as well as one WTA 125k series title to her credit. In April she was nominated for the WTA Player of the month.
Martić is Croatia’s last hope in the singles after Borna Ćorić and Donna Vekić were defeated in their 4th Round matches.
