French Open: Petra Martić bows out in quarterfinals at Roland Garros

PARIS, 2 JUNE 2019 – Petra Martić’s fantastic run at the French Open has come to an end in the quarterfinals on Tuesday at Roland Garros despite staging a great fightback in the second set and saving three match points.

The Croatian went down this evening to 19-year-old Markéta Vondroušová from the Czech Republic in straight sets, 7-6, 7-5 in two hours. 

Martić, who knocked out former world number one Karolína Plíšková earlier in the tournament, made a number of unforced errors at the start of the match and the world no.38 took advantage and broke first in the fifth game of the opening set. 

The Croatian would break straight back and win the next three games in a row and had three set points at 5-4 but she was unable to convert either of them. The set would go into a tie-break which the Czech would take comfortably 7-1. 

Vondroušová, who has not dropped a set all tournament, was starting to hit her stride and went on an amazing run, winning 24 out of 25 points in a row to go 3-0 up in the second set.

Martić offered a glimpse of hope of getting back into the set when she staged a great fight back to level at 5-5, but Vondroušová was too strong in the end and would take the set and match.   

Vondroušová will play Johanna Kontra for a place in the final.

Martić’s previous best at the French Open was a 4th round finish back in 2017. Vondroušová will play Johanna Kontra for a place in the final.
