Vrgorac – discover Dalmatian hinterland heritage

On Saturday, 29 June, the inland Dalmatian town of Vrgorac will celebrate its day together with the feast of St Peter and St Paul. 

Located on the slopes of the Biokovo mountain in the Dalmatian hinterland, Vrgorac is a town known largely for its history, agriculture and famous strawberries. 

The seven forts which surround the town are testimony of its history.  The main fortress Gradina overlooks the medieval town which has produced some famous people, such as poet Tin Ujević.

Surrounded by fertile soils, Vrgorac is around 30 kilometres from the coastal Makarska Riviera, as well Međugorje in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Metković, Vid and natural attractions such as the Biokovo Nature Park, Kravice and Koćuša waterfalls, Neretva River delta and Baćina lakes.

As well as offering local specialties and wines in an authentic rural atmosphere of villages, the Vrgorac region offers plenty for those looking for active holiday with biking, hiking and educational paths, hiking on the slopes of the Biokovo, and tours of the caves in the region of which there are a large number. 

With over 1200 hectares of land and 13 million grape vines, Vrgorac is an agricultural town with over 450 small family-run farms operating in the area today. The most famous product out of Vrgorac is the strawberry, which has developed into a prominent brand. 

Around 7,500 people live in Vrgorac and the surrounding villages of Banja, Dragljane, Draževitići, Duge Njiva, Dusina, Kljenak, Kokorići, Kotezi, Kozica, Kutac, Mijaca, Milošići-Lukavac, Orah, Poijica Kozica. Podprolog, Prapatnice, Ravča, Rašćane, Stilja, Umag, Veliki Prolog, Vina, Višnjica, Vlaka and Zavojana.
