29 June 2019 – Croatia’s number one ranked player, Borna Ćorić, has been forced to pull out of Wimbledon which starts at the All England Club in London on Monday.
The 22-year-old will miss his first Grand Slam since he made his major debut at the US Open in 2014 due to a back injury which has not recovered in time.
“I am sad to announce I have to skip Wimbledon this year. Minor injury with bad timing will keep me out for 7-10 days. I was really looking forward to playing in London, but I have to concentrate on my recovery now and hopefully I will get to London in the end of a year. Positive thing in all this is I am going to spend some time with my family and friends. Thanks for all the messages you guys sent me, see you in Umag,” Ćorić announced on social media this afternoon.
Ćorić was forced to retire from his quarter final match at the Halle Open last week due to back pain and it has not recovered in time.
“Hi guys, I am sorry I had to retire on Friday. I went to the doctor and hopefully, I will be ready for Wimbledon. Thanks for the support everyone, I will keep you posted about my recovery,” he wrote at the time.
He was due to open his campaign at the All England Club against Slovene Aljaž Bedene.
There will still be two Croatian players in the men’s draw with13th seed Marin Čilić facing Adrian Mannarino from France and Ivo Karlović will meet Italy’s Andrea Arnaboldi in round one.
