Wimbledon 2019: Petra Martic makes winning start

LONDON, 1 July 2019 – Croatia’s Petra Martic has made a winning start at Wimbledon with a three-set victory at the All England Club on Monday.
Martic, who is coming off an impressive performance at the French Open where she reached the quarterfinals, beat American Jennifer Brady on court no.17, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.
The Croatian would drop the opening set 3-6 before taking control of the match against the world no.66.
Martic, who is ranked no.24 in the world, was particularly strong at the net, winning 22 points at the net from 28 approaches, took the next two sets 6-3, 6-4 to advance to the next round in just under two hours.
Martic hit three aces and made 23 unforced errors in the match.
Martić will meet the winner of the Anastasia Potapova and Jil Teichmann match in the second round. Croatia’s other hope in the women’s draw, Donna Vekic, takes to the court in her first round match on Tuesday against American Alison Riske.
