LONDON, 2 July 2019 – Marin Cilic has joined Ivo Karlovic and Petra Martic in the second round of Wimbledon on Tuesday.
Cilic, who is the tournament’s 13th seed, beat Adrian Mannarino from France on Tuesday 7-6, 7-6, 6-3 to move into the second round. Although it was a straight-sets victory, the match was tougher than it looked for Cilic who needed two tie-breaks and just under three hours to defeat the world no.42.
Cilic made a number of unforced errors during the opening two sets but his powerful cross-court forehand got him out of trouble a number of occasions as took both tie-breaks.
In the third set, Cilic showed more of the form that saw him reach the final of the All England Club in 2016.
In the next round Cilic will face world no.45 João Sousa from Portugal.
Meanwhile in the women’s draw, Donna Vekic lost her first round match against American Alison Riske on Tuesday. The 22nd seed Croatian won the opening set 6-3 before losing the second set by the same scoreline and the third set 7-5.
