Children’s folk costumes from island of Susak honoured with special stamp

ZAGREB, 5 July 2019 – Croatian Post will release a special commemorative stamp next week to honour children’s folk costumes from the island of Susak.
The Croatian island of Susak is one of the smallest inhabited northern Adriatic islands. The island is geologically different from other Adriatic islands in that it is mostly formed of fine sand laid on a limestone rock base. The village of Susak is the only settlement on the island, with locals mostly involved in fishing and winemaking. Susak kept his archaic dialect (protected as the immaterial cultural good of the Republic of Croatia), specific customs and picturesque folk costumes.

Many people today from the island live in the United States and return during the summer when a big festival is held.
Women’s costumes on the island were worn until the mid-20th century. The preserved newer version, named “po losinjsku”, remained after the Second World War as a costume for girls and brides, and between the two world wars the skirt was shortened above the knees. The costume is worn during the holidays and festivities, and is worn by both adults and children.

The young girl’s costume is the same as the adults with pink prevailing as the base colour, with a multitude of ornaments. The silk blouse is richly decorated with multicoloured ribbons, lace, metal threads and glass beads. A rose coloured skirt, called kamizot, is complex and three heavily worn-out undercuts give it the width. The apron, called tarvijerslica, is pink silk decorated with the same decoration as the blouse. The overall ensemble is complemented by pink-coloured socks and leather shoes. The men’s folk costume of Susak is made up of different types of white shirts and trousers with brown and black vests.

The special “PUMed – Mediterranean folk costumes” series of stamps will be released on 8 July. The author of the stamps with the motif of the children’s folk costume from Suska is Dubravka Zglavnik Horvat, a designer from Zagreb. The postage stamp will have a nominal value of HRK 8.60 with 150,000 copies printed in 16-stamp sheets. The stamps will be available online at www.epostshop.hr.
