Traditional 13th century pirate battle to be reenacted in Omis

ZAGREB, Aug 8 (Hina) – A pirate battle between the Venetians and the historical pirates of the southern Croatian regions of Dubrovnik, Korcula, Klis will be reenacted in the port of the coastal town of Omis on 18 August.

The programme of the 13th edition of the reenactment was presented at a news conference in Split on Thursday.

The event is expected to attract at least 10,000 spectators, including foreign visitors.

About 100 participants will be engaged in the reenacted naval battle, which has become one of the most attractive events during the tourist season in Dalmatia.

The unique reenactment is of the battle between the Omiš pirates and Venetians which took place in the 13th century. Members of the historical honour guards “Kumpanija“ from the town of Blato on the island of Korcula, ‘Trombunjeri’ from the town of Dubrovnik and ‘Uskok’ from the town of Klis will be part of the reenactment as well as armed ‘pirates’ and ‘Venetians’.

Being based on historical events, the Pirate Battle contributes to the branding and promotion of Omis as the pirate town.
