Croatia’s population could fall below 4 million by 2030 if things continue the way they are going. That was the message today when the “Economics of Ageing in Croatia” survey was presented in Zagreb on Friday.
Results from Croatia’s recent census showed that the average age in the country was 42 and that there are 100,000 more people over the age of 65 than there is up to the age of 14.
During the presentation at the Economics Faculty it was mentioned that 5% of the population over the age of 50 had never been married. Current projections indicate that by 2030 1 million Croats will be older than 65, whilst a quarter of a million will be older than 80.
Croatia is one of the oldest nations in the world as life expectancy continues to rise. The survey concluded that a wave of immigration was needed to stop population falling below the 4 million mark.
