Tourist arrivals in Split up 20% in January

SPLIT, 6 February 2020 – More than 10,000 tourists visited the Croatian coastal city of Split in January, which is 20 percent more than in the same period last year, the Split Tourist Board revealed.

The director of the Split Tourist Board, Alijana Vuksic, is convinced that another great tourist year awaits, since 10,254 tourists visited the city in January, and 27,792 overnight stays were recorded, which is 14 percent more than the same period last year. Vuksic says that Split is becoming an attractive tourist destination throughout the year for local and foreign tourists.

Besides tourists from neighbouring Bosnia and Herzegovina, who made up 2,727 of the total arrivals in January, 311 US citizens made up for 2,163 overnights, which was an increase of 18 percent from the previous January. Vuksic points out that US guests stayed in Split for an average of seven days during January, as did the Germans, who spent 1,327 overnights, increasing their January 2019 results in Split by 18 percent.

“The trend of longer stays in the city is becoming more widespread in the winter, as evidenced by the fact that Slovenians had 1004 nights, registering a 74 percent increase, staying in Split for almost six days. However, the largest increase in arrivals in January in Split was from the Asian tourism market,”added Vuksic.

In January, there were 358 Chinese citizens in Split, which is three times more than last year at the same time, there were also many tourists from Thailand, 122 of them, which is also three times more than last year. There were 231 visitors from Japan, twice as much as last year, and 66 tourists from Hong Kong who visited Split, up from 14 last year. The number of guests from Taiwan also increased, as well as tourist from South Africa and Sweden by 73 percent.

Vuksic said that in January, Split had a total of 6,247 foreign visitors and 4,007 domestic visitors, and it was evident that the promotion of Split as an interesting tourist town had reached “every corner of the world” outside the summer months.

“In the past few days, Split and the Split Tourist Board staff have taken part at the New York Times Travel Show. This confirmed the interest of US guests to come and stay in Split as a must-see city once again. It is realistic to expect tourists from the USA to be the most numerous guests of Split in 2020,”concluded Vuksic.
