ZAGREB, 4 March 2020 – Croatia learned its UEFA Nations League opponents on Tuesday after the draw took place in Amsterdam.
Croatia was drawn what coach Zlatko Dalic described as a ‘tough but attractive’ group with the Vatreni in the same group as the current World and European champions.
Croatia will meet Portugal, France, and Sweden in home and away matches between September and November this year.
Croatia will open their UEFA Nations League Group A3 campaign with two away fixtures against Portugal and France. First up will be a trip to Portugal on 5 September, followed by a match against the current World champs in France three days later.
In Round 3 on 9 October, Croatia will play its first match at home when it hosts Sweden. Three days later Croatia will host France.
In the November matches, Croatia heads to Sweden on 12 November, before hosting Portugal in the final match on 15 November.
The four group winners of League A qualify for the Nations League Finals in June 2021, which is played in a knockout format, consisting of the semi-finals, third-place play-off, and final.
In Group A1, Poland, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Italy and Netherlands will battle it out. In Group A2, England was drawn with Belgium, Iceland, and Denmark, whilst Group A4 sees Germany, Ukraine, Spain and Switzerland meet.
“We got probably the toughest group possible but also the most attractive group and I am happy for Croatia. We have got the current World and European champions and Sweden who are a strong side,” coach Zlatko Dalić said after the draw, before adding.
“This will be a great build-up for the World Cup qualifiers which will follow. Our aim will be to win the group.”
